Academy of Hospitality & Tourism

Our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism program provides direct entry into the tourism and hotel industry - the largest service industry in terms of employment and revenue in the United States and the world. The tourism industry is the fourth largest industry in Washington State and the third largest on the Kitsap Peninsula. This class offers highly motivated high school students a chance to experience industry standard academic instruction, paid industry related work experience, and college credit and industry college scholarships. Students will learn customer service basics, business etiquette, computer operations, and the many facets of meeting client needs whether it’s travel for business, fun, or conference planning. Paid internships are available following the junior year.

Helpful attributes and abilities of student:

Understand geography, cultures, and enjoy working with people. Basic understanding of computers.

Length of program:

Program is open entry, which means a student may start at any time depending on available space. Students need at least 1 year for minimum skill development.

Sessions offered:

Session I – 8 - 10:30am
Session II – 11:10am – 1:40pm
Alternating days for Peninsula, Gig Harbor and South Kitsap or customized as needed.

Equivalency credits available:

English, Math, Social Science

*Note: Some school districts do not allow Equivalency Credit. Please check with your high school counselor for approval prior to enrolling.

Course Description:

From transportation and accommodations to tourism systems and services to personal and business travel, students will be taught in the classroom and through work-based learning the necessary skills for a career in this growing industry. Students will learn: how tourism functions; definitions and history of travel; routes and destinations; modes of transportation; travel processes and philosophies; personal vs. professional travel; computer technology; customer service.

Suggested clothing:

Business attire required periodically.
