PUBLIC SAFETY OCCUPATIONS
The Public Safety Occupations program studies the Law Enforcement, Security, and Fire Service Occupations. Leadership and teamwork are main components of the course of study. Students also learn skills in public speaking, self defense, and first aid, effective observation, report writing, rules of evidence, arrest, search and seizure. Students learn principles of fire science, including tetrahedron, hose and ladder, rescue procedures and mechanics.
Report writing, interview and interrogation techniques, forensics, and child abuse are studied. Arrest, search and seizure to include handcuffing, searching and booking procedures are also studied.
Fire streams, ladders, personal protective equipment and SCBA are covered, as well as hoses, emergency medical procedures and fire pump operation.
A successful student with a B or higher grade will qualify for 16 credits at Olympic College.

Course Syllabus
Welcome to the 2005/2006 session of the Public Safety Occupations class at West Sound Tech Skills Center. It is our desire to make this a pleasurable learning experience. This course is 540 hours over a period of 180 school days, with approximately half introducing law enforcement and half with fire service.
ATTENDANCE: This course is for credit and it is expected that students will be in attendance. The attendance requirements will be discussed in detail in class. If a student knows they will be absent, it is highly recommended the student call the Instructor at 478-5181 to advise of their absence.
GRADING: The following criteria will be used for grading purposes; Employability Com petencies 40%, Job Skill Com petencies 40% and Projects 20%. This will be explained in detail in class.
PARTICIPATION: All students are expected to actively participate. Just being present and warming a chair will not be acceptable.
ATTITUDE/ENTHUSIASM: A positive attitude is expected at all times. Students are expected to be enthusiastic in learning about the public safety professions. Some of the material that will be covered will not be as exciting as other material and it is necessary that both components be given enthusiastic and positive attention.
RESPECT: Mutual respect will be shown by all participants in this program. Disrespect is not acceptable. It must be understood there are students of different ages, background, culture and academic level in this class. No put downs or “dissing” will be allowed.
EFFORT: All students are expected to give 100% effort in this class.
FACULTY, STAFF AND VISITORS: Teaching Assistants, Chaperones, Visitors as well as the Office Staff will be given the same respect as the Teacher.
COURSE CONTENT: This course will include physical activity such as running the confidence course, self defense tactics, the use of restraints such as handcuffs, the use of simulated weapons such as firearms and pepper spray. The viewing of videos that may show violence or other factual aspects of human nature may be used. This course will also include the study of Washington State law and criminal justice procedures.
STUDENT EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES: It is expected that an average of three hours a week will be spent on some form of physical activity. Students will be expected to wear clothing and shoes appropriate for “gym or PE class”. Lockers are available in the classroom area. Students must provide their own locks.
The class will design a class logo and T-shirts will be purchased for use as a “class uniform”. These shirts will be worn on all field trips. The cost of the T-shirt is $20, due prior to October 1st.
FIELD TRIPS: It is planned to take field trips during this program. There may also be occasions for the class to leave campus if instructional opportunities are present. It is expected that all students will participate in the field trips.

Program is open entry, which means a student may start at any time depending on space available. Students need at least 1 year for minimum skill development.

Session I – 8-10:30 am
Session II – 11:10 am – 1:40 pm
Alternating days for Peninsula, Gig Harbor and South Kitsap or customized as needed.

*Note: Some school districts do not allow Equivalency Credit. Please check with your high school counselor for approval prior to enrolling.

Course Description:
Students develop basic skills necessary to succeed in a variety of jobs in public safety career fields and go on field trips to police, fire, military installations and civilian correctional facilities.
