Course Information

Welding and Joining technology is a rewarding, though demanding field. If you have the following strengths, you could well be on your way to becoming a success following any one of the many career paths provided by this technology: good mechanical ability, logical mind, learning skills, a team player, imagination, good physical condition, self-discipline and patience, and a sense of integrity.

Starting Salary: $1218 - $2088 per month

Outcomes

At the end of the program successful students will be able to:
  • Safely and accurately use a variety of electric arc processes, basic hand tools and shop equipment to fabricate durable goods.
  • Safely and accurately use a variety of torches and fuel gasses to produce parts that are used to fabricate durable goods.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, responsible/dependable behavior in decision making and task performance.
  • Apply and practice workplace safety policies and procedures in the course of learning welding and related skills.

Helpful attributes and abilities of students:

Good manual dexterity and health. Work on feet for long periods and lift heavy objects. Understand theory and technical information.

Length of program:

Program is open entry, which means a student may start at any time depending on space available. Students need at least 1 year for minimum skill development.

Sessions offered:

Session I – 8 – 10:30 am
Session II – 11:10 am – 1:40 pm
Alternating days for Peninsula, Gig Harbor and South Kitsap or customized as needed.

Equivalency credits available:

Math, Science

*Note: Some school districts do not allow Equivalency Credit. Please check with your high school counselor for approval prior to enrolling.

Articulation:

Olympic College – Welding 101, 6 credits
Certification from Washington Association of Building Officials available upon passing test to weld structural steel.

Course description:

Students learn to cut and join metal using gas torch, arc and wire-feed welding equipment; repair broken metal parts on machinery, equipment, boats and structures. Students can be prepared to meet industry certification requirements as a certified welder upon successful completion of the program. Students will learn: arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, air carbon arc cutting, plasma arc cutting, oxyfuel gas cutting and welding, and flux-core arc welding. You may be prepared to meet industry certification requirements as a certified welder upon successful completion of the program.

Suggested clothing:

Welding gloves (available for purchase), boots, and no loose fitting clothes.
